Purple Heart Info page

Purple Heart is her code name.

Due to the incredible response to the facebook post, this gorgeous rose bush is now for sale through our online shop. Thankyou to all of the lovely people we’ve met through this post. Through sales of this rose $1 for each rose sold will be headed to assist projects helping to prevent suicide in service personel.

Blackberry Nip or Purple Heart as she is nicknamed is a hardy variety, with good disease resistance with medium range perfume, medium height, traditional rose shape in a perfect form. We grow this one in Queensland here on our farm for cut flowers. In Queensland we need to be fussy which varieties we choose. It’s definitely one of my favourites. Don’t believe the guff you hear that roses don’t grow here. They most certainly do. The first step is choosing the right varieties. The story of the post on facebook was the photo was originally taken to show a bride the perfect match for the groom’s tie. There are a number of purple and lilac/lavendar roses but so very few (this is the only one I am aware of) that turn to purple rather than mulberry.

My utmost respect and congratulations go to the breeder because for me, it is one of a kind in it’s perfect purple colour and really neat form. Any favourite of mine must have perfume! This one has it all.

The rose is a protected variety and as such we cannot propagate it ourselves. The roses are pre-ordered from July to May, grafted to suit the orders and delivered from May to August the following year. I have given the rose a code name of “purple heart” I have a very worthy cause I would like to donate some of the proceeds to. A couple of my friends have lost sons to suicide and one particular friend is trying to make a difference particularly for young persons in the armed forces. I’m thinking the response to the facebook post has been completely overwhelming. The orders are coming in. I’m going to donate $1 from every bush sold to this worthy cause and let’s save some of these precious lives.

No shipping available outside of Australia, but in New Zealand contact Glenhaven Rose Nursery.

Thankyou so much to all for the amazing response received and the generous hospitality along the way.
